Department of Urology

Research

A brief description of research projects currently in progress within the department.

Prostate Cancer

  1. ProtecT. A multicentre trial, funded by NHS R&D, to screen 125,000 men for prostate cancer with follow-up for 10 to 15 years
  2. PROMPT. A collaborative research program looking at genomic studies of prostate cancer to investigate new treatments for men with relapsing disease
  3. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of oral sodium clodronate in locally-advanced prostate cancer (MRC PRO4 trial)
  4. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of adjuvant sodium clodronate in patients commencing or responding to hormone therapy for metastatic prostate cancer (MRC PRO5 trial)
  5. A randomized trial of hormone therapy plus radical radiotherapy versus hormone therapy alone in non-metastatic prostate cancer (MRC PRO7 trial)

Urothelial Cancer

  1. Translational studies of MCM5 in bladder and prostate cancer (with Gareth Williams)
  2. A multicentre, prospective, randomized study of the value of a single dose of intravesical Mitomycin in preventing the development of bladder tumours following nephroureterectomy for transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract (ODMIT C trial)
  3. Tissue surplus to diagnostic requirements is being banked for molecular & genetic studies of urological malignancy. In particular, using array comparative genomic hybridization techniques, our intention is to:
    • identify differences in DNA copy number & RNA expression
    • evaluate the role of lymphovascular invasion, lymphangiogenesis & angiogenesis
    • characterize the prognostic features of cancer related to disease severity & dissemination

Overactive Bladder

  1. A 12 week, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, parallel group, multicentre study to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of a compound in patients aged >65 years with overactive bladder (Protocol CDAR328A2409)
  2. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group of cannabis-based medicine extract (CBME) in patients suffering detrusor overactivity associated with multiple sclerosis

Stress Incontinence

  1. The safety and effectiveness of Duloxetin compared with placebo and its long-term safety and efficacy in predominant stress incontinence

This is a CT scan from a 71-year-old woman who had undergone urinary diversion more than 20 years earlier, now presenting with signs of left pyelonephritis and a metabolic acidosis

  1. What does the CT show?
  2. How may this be related to her urinary diversion?
  3. How should she be managed?
