Clinical management
Epididymal cysts are often painful in the early stages of development; this pain invariably settles within 3-6 months and is not influenced by antibiotics.
Referral of epididymal cysts for “reassurance” is actively discouraged by the Department of Urology and such referrals will no longer be accepted. If the patient or referring clinician are concerned about the diagnosis, ultrasound will confirm the cystic nature of the swelling and its relationship to the epididymis
Aspiration is not recommended because of the high risk of recurrence and/or infection. In asymptomatic patients, no treatment is needed.
Referral should only be considered for cysts which are causing significant symptoms (i.e. pain or cosmetic problems)
